With the mid week warm up look for flows to be on the rise and opening up some and going off color about thru the mid/end of week. Fishing pressure picking up some at the dam with downstream guys pretty well spread out. A nice mid week weather period now after the holiday weekend with clear and warm days forecast today and tomorrow. For now trib water temps are on their greatest fall so far this fall season. Its all about water flows Water flows are the single biggest factor in encouraging upstream movements of fish during the fall, winter and spring trib seasons. When high flows drop and/or cold flows warm and/or dirty water clears then anglers who can make good drifts or swings get in on the action. Then, with 10 days of flat water, along with the number of tournaments & derbies held and the pressure of a lot of fishing boats within a 10 mile x 1 mile stretch, the fish diminished their desire to bite. Flows are dropping and clearing all around. Since 1/4 inch of rain did not do much it looks like 1/2 inch or more of rain in a storm or otherwise would be needed to effect any positive change in flows. This is after mostly tougher action reported for the begin part of the past weekend. Anglers often find flows still a bit high and a bit stained and for sure cold but thats the nature of steelheading and the chance for a multiple hook up day. Working 100-200 fow, It took us a while to get bit, but our first fish was a 17 lb king. Over in Wilson, the recent rains actually pulled some salmon into 12 Mile Creek and salmon and trout are being caught off the piers there, as well. From 9-mile point to the high rocks has been the most consistent producer for a lot of boats; as well as in front of the Salmon River. Plenty of salmon are spawning now in the higher flows and some of the post spawn zombies will be flushed out along with lots of other weeds and debris. So if youre following this the moral of the story is that the weather is up and down and therefore so are the water levels and fishable conditions. DEC has received a few reports of dead fish on Sandy Creek and Johnson Creek, likely due to fishing mortality, but has not received any reports of abnormally large numbers of dead fish from Oak Orchard Creek. Lots of anglers anxious to get out there, and a few are, but the Kings are pretty much following a normal script as far as timing. You can catch steelhead and some browns.
